Abdullah Öcalan

Abdullah Öcalan is a Kurdish political leader and founding member of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has been involved in an armed struggle against the Turkish state since the late 1970s, seeking greater autonomy and rights for Kurds in Turkey. He was captured in 1999 and has since been imprisoned, where he has continued to influence Kurdish politics. Öcalan is a controversial figure; he is viewed as a terrorist by the Turkish government and some other entities, while many Kurds see him as a symbol of their national identity and struggle for rights. His ideology has evolved from a focus on armed struggle to advocating for broader democratic and social movements.
